BBC Broadcasting House _ Ramboll (Whitbybird): ground engineering, Temporary works engineering
MacCormac Jamieson Prichard Architects, Sheppard Robson Architects
The BBC's W1 broadcasting complex consists of two linked buildings and a refurbished Broadcasting House. The focus of the complex is an atria-lit newsroom at the base of the main building.
At the heart of the second phase of the project sits Europe’s largest live newsroom. Due to the proximity of the adjacent structures, the basement had to be constructed around extensive temporary works which were required to support the retained walls. This required the outer diaphragms be substantially complete before the central core could commence, making the overall construction logistically challenging.
